In order to make this website accessible to as many members as possible – and perhaps potential members who may not be as fit as we once were – we have provided screen reader capability to all pages. In fact there are two separate screen reader options, and these are described in this page, with instructions as appropriate.
Trinity Audio
The Trinity player is used in all News posts, and can be seen there below the title and above the content, with the label ‘Hear this page!’:
To hear the post read to you, click the symbol (chevron contained in a circle). Note that the timing of the reading is given – in the example shown this is one minute and twenty seconds. You can pause the playing (standard pause control),:
and you can continue to play, or click into the time stream to restart or skip to a later point.
Translation
If you click the globe symbol, right of the timing, you will invoke a small menu presenting different language options:
While the default reading is English, you may select alternatively: German, French, Spanish, Chinese, or Italian, and the voice will simultaneously translate the text into the chosen language.
Screen reader
The second screen reader has the prosaic name ‘Screen Reader’! We are able to change this to something more distinctive – so if you have an idea….
This reader is capable of reading ALL pages.
The Screen Reader controls are found in the bottom right of the screen:
Please note that this little object is not ‘on’ the page, but always sits above the page, and so is always in the same position on the viewing screen.
The Screen Reader is enabled by clicking on it. This will invoke a pop-up menu:
This menu presents a number of controls:
Play – by default, this will ‘read’ the whole screen. You can however select a word, a phrase, or a sentence and use the reader to read just the highlighted text.
Pause
Stop
Increase – this increases the font size to make it more readable. Note that this will not increase the size of images on the page.
Decrease – decreases the font size
Reset – resets the font size to the original
Dyslexic font – renders the text in a more readable font, overriding the defined font
Toggle high contrast – sets a dark blue background with white text
Toggle high contrast – sets a black background with white text
Toggle high contrast – sets a dark green background with white text
[Tech note: The High Contrast feature, based on HTML5, makes it possible to have a high contrast rendering working without the need to customize CSS classes. Thanks to a complex algorithm the HTML5 High Contrast offers 3 different high contrast rendering types, and calculates the colours inversion automatically, thus a high contrast is applied with zero customizations.]
Sadly, the Screen Reader cannot perform translations.
Please contact in case of any difficulty in operation, or if you have specific comments.
