An extensive report, by Margaret Shaw, on the latest Coffee Morning talk is now available. ” How medicines were invented”, given by u3a member Mike Hollingsworth, was our July online talk.

Opium poppy seed head

Mike’s talk focused on 3 common medicines – Morphine, Aspirin and Penicillin, and illustrated how chance, inspiration and perspiration – sheer hard work – contributed to the knowledge we have today of how to ameliorate human pain.

What is it in opium that helps to manage pain? How did ‘aspirin’ get its name?  and who was the first British patient to receive penicillin?
