Alex Christofi weaves carefully chosen excerpts of Dostoevsky’s work with the historical context to form an illuminating and interesting insight into Dostoevsky’s world and that of Russian culture. Dostoevsky’s life was marked by brilliance and brutality. He survived a mock execution and Siberian exile, to live through a time of seismic change in Russia, eventually being accepted into the Tsar’s inner circle. He had three great love affairs, each overshadowed by his debilitating epilepsy and addiction to gambling. Even if you haven’t read any of Dostoevsky’s books, you will learn what it felt like living in 19th century Russia and the influencing factors in his work. I am certain that upon reading this cleverly written biography you will want to read or re-read Dostoevsky’s novels.
