The speaker was very good, and did a really excellent overview of events. I was interested that she said that she was not aware of the floods at the time. I remember watching events unfold with horror. I had not at that time been to Florence, but was already interested in early art, and the apparent loss of the Cimabue altarpiece was grim. Later I read much about the rescue and recovery operation.
I was not able to visit Florence until 1995, but found it was well worth waiting for. A magnificent city, soaked in history and culture. Sadly I have only returned once, but this may have stimulated a desire to go back again!
