A most charming book, wry and witty. Alexander (the gentleman) is someone who, had he existed, I would love to have met and would have probably been utterly engaged and seduced. Not a page-turner in the conventional sense as his story enfolds in a leisurely conversational way, but an easy read that has humour, sadness and a grain of truth at its heart. Highly recommended.

I completely agree with the above comments by Lesley. This very unusual book completely won me over and I recommend it to anyone. I understand a film is being made of this book, only hope they don’t ruin it!
